(Nov. 10-16) —A new restoration of Julien Duvivier's 1947 thriller based on a novel by Belgian crime titan Georges Simenon.

In the end-of-the-tramway-from-Paris suburb Villejuif (you do the translation), suspicion and gossip run rampant. Last night an old maid was murdered in that vacant lot near the church. Hanging around has been the bearded, aloof shutterbug Monsieur Hire (real name: the “foreign”-sounding Hirovitch), played by the celebrated actor Michel Simon, who in real-life had been wrongly denounced as Jewish in occupied Paris by the notorious 1941 anti-Semitic exhibition "Le Juif et la France."

Is Hire/Hirovitch a peeping tom? A pervert? Not the ideal spot for back-from-the-slammer Viviane Romance to start a new life.

In French with English subtitles.

"A brilliant performance by Michel Simon as the victim of cruel abuse — the symbol of animal alienation of any creature that is strange or 'different' " — Bosley Crowther, The New York Times

A "near-perfect piece of film craftsmanship" — Pauline Kael
