50 years ago, Rabbi Arthur Waskow hosted the first Freedom Seder, a template for how to incorporate social justice into a modern seder. This year, we bring you the Escalation Seder, a variety show and bacchanal lovingly deconstructing all of Jewish history. Building on Walter Benjamin's observation that "behind every fascism is a failed revolution," the variety-show-slash-seder will follow the order of a conventional Passover seder, using music, art, (occasionally nude) performance, a choral adaptation of the Communist Manifesto, and pathbreaking Jewish artists to explore the connections between our rituals, history, and liberation.
After the seder, we’ll have an Afikoman in the pre-rabbinic sense of the term: not a piece of matzo, but a debauched afterparty of music, revelry, and art. Just the kind of post-seder bacchanalia the Talmudic sages feared.
Founded in 1946, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture of the Jewish left.
