Paul Shapiro's Ribs & Brisket Review

(Tonight at 8:30 and 10:00) — Paul Shapiro, who's been called "the downtown version of Jewish novelty maestro Mickey Katz" leads his band Ribs & Brisket Revue through a lively set that swings hard and is funny to boot. From "The Ballad of Irving" to "Yiddishe Mambo" with some "Dunkin’ Bagel" schmeared in between, “Shapiro stirs klezmer, swing and R&B, seasoning it all with a potent Yiddish tinge,” reported Time Out. Shapiro has performed with notables such as Lou Reed, Queen Latifah, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, The Microscopic Septet, Arturo O’Farrill, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Jackson and Ofra Haza, but it was his 2003 release on John Zorn's Tzadik label entitled "Midnight Minyan" that started him on a path that recently found him on the cover of Charles Hersch' scholarly tome "Jews and Jazz" and performing at international festivals celebrating Jewish culture. His wonderfully multi-ethnic and highly talented ensemble brings together many genres and is extremely fun, listenable and danceable.

"A heaping platter of rhythm and blues and jazz served with a schmear of classic Yiddish culture is the special of the day for this joyful outfit. Led by the exuberant saxophonist Shapiro and featuring the vocalist Cilla Owens, the Revue is always willing to time warp to an era when sympathetic musical genres regularly shared the same table." — The New Yorker

Paul Shapiro (sax, clarinet & vocals) and dynamic vocalist Cilla Owens are joined by Jerry Korman on piano, Booker King on bass and Tony Lewis on drums.
