Marika Hughes

A Juilliard-trained cellist whose music incorporates classical, jazz and experimental, Marika Hughes fronts the funky band Bottom Heavy. A granddaughter of Emanuel Feuermann, one of the 20th century's greatest cellists and a Holocaust refugee, Hughes grew up on the Upper West Side, a regular on "Sesame Street."

Hughes will be in residence every Saturday in January. This week, Marika will be joined by Charlie Burnham on violin/voice and Marvin Sewell on guitar. This acoustic threesome have played together for years and on this night they will play music from Marika’s upcoming record, an album unapologetically about loss, with some new tunes and some older — steeped in themes of love, loss and gratitude.

“Marika Hughes makes a joyful noise at the intersection of classical, jazz and experimental avenues on her solo outing . . . In her hands the sound melts with the warm tones and disciplined approach . . . her varied arsenal of sound, textures and approach is on display here, as is her voice . . . she croons an infectious blues.” — Mark Corroto, All About Jazz
