"The Golem" with Live Performance by Gary Lucas

A forerunner to "Frankenstein," among other canonical horror films, this silent stunner based on a 16th-century Jewish myth stars co-director Paul Wegener in the title role, a monster shaped out of clay by a rabbi and sent to the Hapsburg emperor to discourage further persecution of his Jewish citizenry.

Wegener’s third treatment of the material is justly famed for its extravagant performances and architect Hans Poelzig’s amazing sets, which render the city of Prague’s ghetto in jagged shadows and looming towers — images expressing the tormented soul of the German Expressionist school.

Legendary Captain Beefheart Magic Band guitarist Gary Lucas will perform a live accompaniment to the film on the 30th anniversary of his original score for "The Golem."

Directed by Paul Wegener, Albert Steinrück and Lyda Salmonova, 1920.

4K restoration struck from the original German negative by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, Wiesbaden, in cooperation with the Royal Film Archive of Belgium. With the assistance of L’Immagine Ritrovata and George Eastman Museum. Restoration supervised by Anke Wilkening.
