Lea Michele: The Jew Crush

Lea Michele bares all we bare our souls

Actress and singer Lea Michele has been sharing her gift of song for years — and on New Years Eve the 30-year-old star shared a little something extra. Michele, a soprano, hit a high note when she welcomed 2017 with a nude photo of herself that she posted on her Instagram account. Perched atop a wall, the “Scream Queens” star lounges in the buff (save for a strategically placed leaf emoji), fittingly looking out towards nature with the caption reading, “Loving you so far 2017.” And it’s safe to say 2017 is loving her back. While we have had our eye on the Bronx-born Jewish actress for some time, her generous post kicked things up to another level.

Seven reason we have a Jewess crush on Lea Michele:

1. Bronx baby. Born Lea Michele Sarfati in the Bronx, Michele was raised by a Catholic mother and a Jewish father. Michele’s father, Mark David Sarfati, is of Sephardic Jewish descent and owned a delicatessen before becoming a real estate agent. While Michele attended church in her youth, she was raised around Jewish culture — plus she calls Barbra Streisand her role model. So, come on.

2. Broadway child. Michele made her Broadway debut at a young age. From her youth she started appearing in Broadway productions including “Les Miserables,” “Ragtime,” and “Fiddler on the Roof” — during her senior year of high school, she played Shprintze and understudied for the role of Chava in the Broadway revival.

3. Rock star. During her summers in high school Michele attended Stagedoor Manor in the Catskills (aka the Borscht Belt), where she performed in “Side by Side by Sondheim” among other productions but during her last summer she left early after landing the lead role in the  rock musical “Spring Awakening.” Based on a German play of the same name, the production took Broadway to a novel place, using alternative rock in the folk-rock infused score and exploring themes of teenage tumult and sexuality.

4. Full of glee. Most probably fell in love with Michele as Rachel Berry, the female lead and star singer of the hit musical dramedy television series “Glee,”. Running from 2009 to 2015, the popular show featured 728 musical performances, several of which won Michele a Satellite Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and three consecutive People’s Choice Awards.

5. She can write. Michele’s artistic abilities don’t stop with her talents as a performer — she has written two books: “Brunette Ambition” and “You First: Journal Your Way to Your Best Life.”

6. Paid her dues. In her teens, when she wasn’t working on stage, Michele had a few part times jobs: one was working in her father’s deli and the other was at a bat mitzvah dress shop.

7. Mensch alert. Michele has been involved in a number of philanthropic causes for years. In 2007 she supported Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS performing in 2007 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, and has performed in a number of benefit concerts including The Painted Turtle, the Grammy Award’s MusiCares benefit in L.A., the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation’s Taste for a Cure, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, the Human Rights Campaign dinner in support of gay rights and others. In addition, she has shown an undying love for animals having appeared in a PSA For PETA as well as other advertising campaigns for the animal right’s group.
