Book of J

Book of J will appear every Saturday in July, each week with a different guest.

The BBC describes them as “a wonder of haunted American roots music, taking listeners from Yiddish laments to labor anthems via mystical twists and turns.” The San Francisco Chronicle calls them "soulful and weird in all the best ways." Nerdy commie queer superstar Jewlia Eisenberg (Charming Hostess) sings with Piedmont blues hero Jeremiah Lockwood (Sway Machinery) until the walls fall down. Folk music for the end of days!

Expect old-time religion, radical politics, angels and demons, workers and bosses, diasporic languages, erotic longing, hard times resolved and destiny fulfilled.

This Week: with special guest Steve Ulrich (Big Lazy), guitar.

“This affecting West Coast duo covers an expansive musical landscape that encompasses gothic Yiddish songs, Piedmont Blues, Queer Politics and Leonard Cohen covers." — The New Yorker

Jewlia Eisenberg is a vocalist, recording artist, ethnomusicologist and founder of the Yiddish/Balkan funk-punk band Charming Hostess. Jeremiah Lockwood's band The Sway Machinery mixes 200-year-old cantorial melodies with Afro-pop horn parts and subway blues.

Please, make sure to bring a valid ID.
