Book of J

Jeremiah Lockwood of The Sway Machinery (“unclassifiable, uplifting” — The New Yorker) and Jewlia Eisenberg of Charming Hostess (“blithe and frisky”  — The New York Times) return for their duo project, Book of J, in a record release residency at  Barbès every Saturday in July. Expect a classic folk duo format (guitar accompanying a male and a female voice), taking inspiration from the intersection of the sacred and the radical to create hit songs from out of the depths of American psalmody, Yiddish folklore, and international Jewish liturgical traditions.

“This affecting West Coast duo covers an expansive musical landscape that encompasses gothic Yiddish songs, Piedmont Blues, Queer Politics and Leonard Cohen covers." — The New Yorker

Jewlia Eisenberg is a vocalist, recording artist, ethnomusicologist and founder of the Yiddish/Balkan funk-punk band Charming Hostess. Jeremiah Lockwood's band The Sway Machinery mixes 200-year-old cantorial melodies with Afro-pop horn parts and subway blues.

This week:
Special guest: The Fraternal Order of the Society Blues — a tribute to the life and music of Carolina Slim, featuring Ricky Gordon (washboard, voice) and Ernesto Gomez (harmonica, voice).

Please, make sure to bring a valid ID.
