(Tonight at 7:30 & 9:30) — Since moving to New York in 2009 as a member of bassist Avishai Cohen’s group, the Israeli-born pianist and composer Shai Maestro has amassed a wealth of sideman credits — with John Patitucci, Donny McCaslin, Anat Cohen, and Antonio Hart, just to name a few. More importantly, since July 2010 he’s led one of the finest piano trios in jazz today, with the Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder and Israeli drummer Ziv Ravitz. Reviewing a Shai Maestro Trio performance in 2014 for Jazzwise, Mike Flynn heard “just how much he’s grown as a solo artist since his formative days alongside Avishai Cohen … Maestro’s shimmering chords and dynamic buildups — always capped by whizzing piano and drum crosscurrents from Ziv Ravitz — highlighted the pianist’s impassioned, emotionally rich compositions …” Tonight at Jazz Standard, Shai Maestro brings to life the music of his latest CD, "The Stone Skipper." The trio will be joined by one of the album’s several special guests, the enchanting vocalist Gretchen Parlato.
