Riverside Jazz at City Vineyard: Matt Darriau and XALAM Trio

Matt Darriau was named one of the most influental jazz musicians of the last fifteen years by Jazziz Magazine for bringing Balkan rhythms and melodies into jazz. He joined the Klezmatics as the band's reedman in 1995. 

Besides being a leading innovator in music's Jewish Alternative Movement (with his own Paradox Trio), Darriau has also been active as a composer and musician in the new Celtic band Whirligig, the big band Orange Then Blue, his swing band Ballin´ The Jack and the Recycled Waltz Orchestra, a quintet dedicated to film music. Matt also plays alto saxophone and clarinet, several ethnic flutes from the Balkans (kaval, gaida) and owns wooden flutes from all over the world.

Darriau was presented with both of his bands, Ballin' The Jack and Paradox Trio, at the Jazzfest Berlin.

As a leading artist of the downtown music scene in New York, Darriau played with Gunther Schuller, The Klezmatics, Frank London, Lorin Sklamberg, Elliott Sharp, Marc Ribot, George Schuller, Theodosii Spassov, Mark Feldman and many others.
