Following a 25-year partnership with Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers approached Oscar Hammerstein II with the possibility of creating a musical from Lynn Rigg’s 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. That first collaboration turned into Oklahoma, the first of a series of groundbreaking musicals, including Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific and The Sound of Music. Joelle Wallach examines each of these enduring shows; characteristics of the music, lyrics and creative collaborative process, as well as how each work reflects the societal issues and concerns of its time. This is the second of a two-part series.
