figure out who the single Jewish person is in the room. Founder of the Yenta App, Luba Tolkachyov, just solved this problem for you.
Yenta is a location-based mobile dating application for Jewish singles. In other words, it will tell you who else in the room is available to make out with or ask on a date.
“We really wanted to create a tool for members to be able to connect with those near them serendipitously and instantly,” Luba said.
One purpose of this application was to make dating fun and exciting again by identifying others who are Jewish and single near you so you can talk right then and there, she says.
Luba got the idea one night when applying mascara. “The thought that kept running through my head was, ‘How cool would it be if I was on my college campus (back in the day) and I can see who else is Jewish and single in my classes, networking events and at the library.’” This is not something that single Jews were able to do, until now. In just a few weeks, she and her cofounders set up shop and launched the App.
What are some perks of Yenta dating? For one, there is no lengthy profile to fill out. Instead, members answer three easy questions: What’s your shtick? How Jewish are you? What will impress your mother? Once photos are uploaded, you’re ready to meet a match anywhere you go.
Second perk: the app is free! The third perk, and perhaps the most important, is that you now don’t have to miss opportunities to meet great people who are right next to you at the gym, or next in line for coffee. “No dating site does that,” Luba said.
Yenta is only one month old and already has hundreds of users across the world.
There is no need to fill out lengthy profiles, scan other users on the database, send messages, wait for replies that may never come, or engage in awkward back and forth conversations to only never even meet, Luba says. Yenta tells you who is Jewish and single near you on the spot and lets you chat with them instantly. When you change location, so do the Jewish singles near you. That's serendipity at its best, she says.
To join in on the fun, download Yenta from the Apple Store on the iOS platform (no Android version yet). Then sign up or log in using your Facebook profile. Once you’re all set, give it a try!
If you are walking past a bar and see that three Yenta members are inside, you can come right in and buy them a drink (or, you know, have them buy you a drink), Luba suggests. Members can also chat on the app from across the room. We’ll be on the lookout out for your wink!
